When traveling by plane be sure and remove anything removable on your power chair so it dosn’t get lost in transit. Tape everything to your chair. Take your cushion with you onto the plane. Insist they allow you to stay in your chair right to the door of the plane(of course leaving room for transferring). Be sure when they’re transferring you DON’T let them lift you by your shoulders(grabbing under the arms) It’s a good way to pull your shoulder out of whack. Be sure and ask the hotel if your bed is hollow underneath it if you have to use a lift.Just becuase it’s an ADA room doesn’t always mean the beds are hollow under them. Ask if there is a shower chair in the bathroom before your rent one. If you need to rent or find something ask the local Disabled Vets organization. Sometimes they have things you can use for free.

Hi…..I’m a c5-6 quad and have invented a portable commode/shower chair because I was never able to find one anywhere and, hence, was never able to
travel. Check it out here:

Sometimes while traveling one needs to bring their own shower chair. Perhaps it is because you are staying in a cabin or a friend’s house that is not up to ADA codes or even an older hotel that does not carry such equipment.
Bringing your heavy duty shower chair that you use on a regular basis is not convenient or easy for anyone. This is why it is a good idea to also have a more portable shower chair.
One of the lightest ones I have found is the “Invacare CareGuard Shower Chair.”
Here are all the specs:
Seat Width: 21″
Seat Depth: 12.75″
Seat to Back Height: 17.25″
Overall Base Width: 17.25″
Overall Base Depth: up to 18.75″
Product Weight: 7 lbs. 6 oz.
Weight Capacity: 315 lbs.

When traveling, it’s a good idea to bring some compression socks with you, especially if you are flying. These specially created socks are tightly woven to improve blood circulation. They are for men and woman and come as either knee high or thigh high. I’ve only seen them in the color black or white, but others could exist. Some insurance plans do cover these compression socks but can also be found through many medical distribution companies online.

While traveling, I recommend buying a Waffle Air Cushion for the shower. It can easily be blown up by mouth in seconds and takes up little space in a suitcase when deflated. The Waffle Air Cushion provides a comfortable layer to the hard plastic shower chairs most lodging accommodations offer. Most insurance plans should cover part or all of this cost but can also be bought online through various medical supply dealers.
