Comfort Inn in Sonora, Texas is located on Interstate 10 at Sonora, halfway between Houston and El Paso on the western edge of Texas HIll Country. The hotel has easy access to the I-10. A few restaurants, convenience markets and gas stations close by. It’s also a two-story, 100% non-smoking hotel with exterior corridors; guest rooms open to the outside. There is no elevator to the second floor. Designated accessible parking is available, 2-3 spaces by the main entrance and also outside the door to the accessible room(s). No valet.

Lobby: Covered front entrance. Entrance doors are not automatic. Floor is tile. Front desk is lowered on one end for wheelchair access. There is an accessible restroom in the lobby.Amenities: Free wifi. Full hot breakfast included with room, served in dining area in lobby. Outdoor pool (seasonal) did not show a lift but it could be stored for winter. There is a computer with printer in the lobby for guests’ use. There is a fitness room with free weights but it is small, space is tight. They advertise a guest laundry but I did not check it.
Guest Room: Stayed in room 111; king bed with roll-in shower. Doorways are 36″ or wider. Door opens with key card and there a lowered peephole in the door. The room has ample space to access either side of the bed, but the bed is a bit high (estimate 25-26″). Desk and bath vanity are appropriate height for wheelchair. Roll-in shower has removable plastic shower bench with back and hand-held shower head. Towel rack and tissue box mounted on wall behind toilet are too high. Closet pole is too high. Other room amenities like TV remote, coffee pot, power outlets, temperature controls, hair dryer, refrigerator and microwave are within reach.
Jeannette has used a manual wheelchair for mobility since an automobile accident in the early 80's. She spent many years working as an advocate for people with disabilities; promoting the passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act, serving as Miss Wheelchair Virginia, and writing the grant to found an independent living center where she was elected Chairman of the Board and implemented an advocacy training program. Now semi-retired, she enjoys traveling with her husband, riding her handcycle, and having more time to spend on photography and art.
