The Martin Murphy Trail near Santa Cruz in Central California county of Santa Clara is a unique loop trail with a lot to offer. First and foremost is the scenic view of the Diablo Range’s rolling hills that the trail nestles up to. At times, farmers will let their cattle graze in the meadow that the trail encompasses.

Various species of birds will also keep you company during your hike. Due to its countryside location, it is a very peaceful and relaxing hike. It does get hot during the summer months, but another distinctive feature of the Martin Murphy Trail are the four wheelchair-accessible shade structures located along the trail. There are two accessible parking spots, picnic tables, and an accessible porta potty.

In 1996, my Muscular Dystrophy progressed to the point where I needed a ventilator to help me breathe. As in nature, one learns to adapt to their environment and, for me, that meant adapting to the world around me with physical limitations and from a wheelchair. Seeing that there was little information on accessible hiking trails, I began making videos of each trail I visited so I could share with others in wheelchairs. I'm a published writer, composer, videographer, and amateur nature photographer. Life is what you make it. Please visit my blog for more information on accessible trails in the SF Bay Area.
