Morro Bay, located on California’s stunning Central Coast, is a wheelchair-friendly destination known for its iconic Morro Rock, marine wildlife, scenic trails, and relaxed coastal vibes. From nature walks to fresh seafood dining, there’s something for everyone—with accessibility in mind.

Community Accessibility Commitment: The City of Morro Bay ensures communication aids and ADA services are available for all city programs. See their official ADA notice for details.

Accessible Nature & Outdoor Experiences

  • Morro Bay State Park: This beautiful state park features the Marina Peninsula Trail, a 0.7-mile loop of compacted soil and boardwalk with scenic estuary views. It has accessible parking and restrooms. The nearby Museum Trail leads to the Museum of Natural History, also equipped with paved paths and ADA facilities.
  • Morro Bay Harborwalk: A half-mile paved, ADA-compliant path that connects the Embarcadero to Morro Rock. It offers safe, scenic access with flat surfaces and views of marine life—including sea otters. Accessible parking is available nearby. At the base of Morro Rock, a hard-packed dirt path extends to the left and offers additional views, though it ends at a rocky barrier.
  • Beach Wheelchair Rentals: The City of Morro Bay provides beach wheelchairs for free from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Available for reservation through programs like Jack’s Helping Hand and Wonders Within Reach.
  • Morro Strand State Beach: Features an accessible boardwalk with views of Morro Rock and two ADA RV campsites. Beach wheelchairs can be reserved through the city.

Unique Wheelchair-Accessible Attractions

  • Morro Bay Maritime Museum: Features accessible exhibits and wide walkways with open-air ship displays.
  • The Embarcadero Promenade: A flat, pedestrian-friendly boardwalk lined with shops, galleries, and eateries. It includes several accessible overlooks with panoramic views of the bay and Morro Rock. It connects to the Morro Bay Harborwalk.

Nearby Accessible Outdoor Attractions

  • Sweet Springs Nature Preserve (Los Osos): Just a short drive from Morro Bay, Sweet Springs offers an ADA-compliant parking space at 4th & Ramona that connects to a granite path and raised boardwalk. Visitors can enjoy a bird-viewing platform overlooking the bay, interpretive signage, and benches. Pets are not allowed.
  • Elfin Forest Natural Area (Los Osos): This 1-mile boardwalk loop through pygmy oak forest is wheelchair accessible and features panoramic estuary views, native plants, and informational signs. Access is flat and peaceful for all users.
  • Montaña de Oro State Park (Outside Morro Bay): Located about 6 miles southwest of town, this coastal state park includes rugged terrain, but the Bluff Trail is a smoother option for wheelchairs with stunning views along a wide path. Confirm access points before visiting.
  • El Chorro Regional Park & Botanical Garden: Located between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo, El Chorro offers scenic campground loops, group picnic areas, ball fields, and trails. The on-site San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden may have wheelchair-friendly paths, though terrain varies. The El Chorro Dog Park is also on site. Contact the park directly for the most current ADA access details.
