Downtown Santa Rosa, California La Rose Historic Hotel

Hotel La Rose is in the heart of Downtown Santa Rosa and has been open since 1907. The building itself is also historic but has made adaptions to improve accessibility. Guests staying at the hotel can park in the designated parking lot located across the street, behind a café.

Although there are no automatic main doors or lowered counter at check-in, there is a wheelchair accessible restroom in the lobby. Around the corner from the check-in desk is a dining area where continental breakfast is served from 7-9am. A total of three guest rooms have been modified for better access: #20 (King), #29 (King Suite), and #58 (Double). All of these rooms have a bathroom with a tub setup. An elevator, big enough for two manual chairs, takes guests to rooms #20 and #29. Room #58 is located in Carriage House across the street from the main hotel. Accessing this room first requires going through a locked metal gate, which can be challenging for some. Carpet is nearly everywhere throughout the hotel.

I stayed in room #20 and felt that the door is awkward to open. There is also no lowered peephole on the door. Just through the door to the left is the HVAC controls within arm’s reach, once the chair is removed. A wheelchair could access both sides of the bed, and the bed itself is not too high. Next to the bed is an antique beauty dresser that may be accessible to some.

In the bathroom, the bathtub is equipped with a hand-held shower nozzle, grab-bars, and a portable shower seat with a back. The shelf is not accessible to those who cannot stand up in the bathtub. The bathroom also has a roll-up sink and a toilet with grab-bars.
