Temecula, California: Inn at Churon Winery

The Inn at Churon Winery is a French-inspired chateau overlooking the rolling hills of vineyards in the Temecula Wine Country of Southern California right off of Rancho California Road.

The lobby is partially carpeted and is also where a five-course meal that is paired with wine is served every Friday and Saturday night; reservations are needed. The hallway to the wheelchair accessible room is carpeted and on the way you pass the dining room used for breakfast. Each room gets complimentary breakfast for two people and additional guests are charged a fee. Breakfast is served from 8-10am Monday thru Friday and on Saturdays and Sundays it’s 8-10:30am.

Room #101 was the only handicapped accessible room available, so you must tell the reservationist that the room must be guaranteed because you are in a wheelchair. This room is located on the ground floor and was very quiet. The room was lovely with antique furniture and a marble fireplace. A private patio that looks out to the hills and vineyards is paved. The bed was unbearably high to transfer onto but the staff kindly removed the box spring which solved the problem. The bed’s frame was wood and this created about a three-inch gap between where my wheelchair was positioned and the mattress. Enough space was on either side of the bed for a wheelchair. The nightstand and another table blocked access to the closet. The heat/AC controls were within reach.

The bathroom was on the right-hand side when first entering the room and was very spacious with marble floors and countertops. When entering the bathroom, a roll-up sink was directly in front, and a roll-up vanity area was perpendicular to it. A hairdryer was within reach but the magnifying mirror was not and the position of the regular bathroom mirrors was not angled at all for a full or even half-body view. A wheelchair friendly toilet was adjacent to the sink with grab bars. In front of the toilet was the roll-in shower, which was very spacious but did not come with a hand-held shower nozzle. A portable shower bench can be added to your room upon request.

If staying on a Saturday night, the Inn at Churon Winery provides a complimentary bottle of wine. The tasting room for Churon Winery is one floor below the lobby, which can be accessed by wheelchair via an outside ramp. Every day from 5-6pm a complimentary wine reception is held for guests of the inn in the tasting room, which includes snacks. I was told that one glass of wine is given per guest but received a lot more than that. On Saturdays, this reception is from 5:30-6:30pm. If you like, you can also ask whoever is at the reception desk to get you a glass if you rather enjoy the ambiance of the outdoor patio adjacent to the lobby or in your room. These are the perks of staying at a winery.
