The Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites is located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles off Figueroa Street. The architecture of the hotel is iconic, featuring protruding cylinders on the outside where the elevators transcend with lights. Right outside the main entrance of the hotel is a handicapped parking spot that is used for loading and unloading. Valet parking is required, unless you find street parking, so park in the handicapped spot and gather your things then a valet attendant will come to collect keys to the car.

The main entrance has automatic doors and the lobby floor is directly through them. The lobby is impressive with water features all around. I was pleased to find a lowered check-in counter for wheelchair users. To access the various areas of the hotel are elevators which are all color coded to help you more easily figure out how to get to where you want to go. Included in this hotel is a six-story shopping mall.

Rooms

There are twenty-six wheelchair accessible rooms with a roll-in shower. No handicapped rooms are available with a bathtub. Four of the accessible rooms are suites. All rooms are accessed with a card to open the room. The hallway and the room itself are carpeted. The door to the accessible room was wide and included a lowered peep hole. The suite included an area with chairs, a bar, a desk and flat screen television. In this area, a tall lamp could only be turned on by pressing a button that was on the floor which could be difficult to reach for some and a poor design in general. The heat/AC controls were within reach.

The bed could be accessed by a wheelchair on both sides and was at good height. Lamps were on either side of the bed and can be turned on by pushing a button at the base of the lamp that was within reach. A closet with a lowered bar was near the bed. Blinds for the windows could be opened by pulling a cord; however, the windows are not designed to open.

The bathroom was adjacent to the bed and was a quite spacious. The toilet was the first thing you see when entering and had grab bars on the back of the toilet as well as on the side. The counter top to the roll-up sink had ample space for all my bathroom items. Behind the door of the bathroom was a full length mirror. Next to the sink was the roll-in shower that had a very small lip to keep water from spilling out to the rest of the bathroom. This roll-in shower had a flip-down wooden bench. There was a hand-held shower nozzle but the holder for it was broken and had not been replaced. I needed to call the front desk for assistance to get the hand-held shower nozzle within reach.

Food & Beverage

19 restaurants and cafés are located at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites, offering a delightful range of dining options and atmospheres to suit any taste A café is located on this level serving coffee and snacks all day and in the evening it becomes a bar serving cocktails and appetizers. Also on this floor is an American cuisine restaurant that is open for breakfast and lunch. The BonaVista Lounge is a revolving cocktail lounge located on the 34th floor with panoramic views of Downtown Los Angeles. On the 35th floor is the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites signature restaurant called LA Prime and serves upscale American cuisine like lobster and USDA-certified prime beef. Food and beverages can also be found within the hotel’s six-story mall.

Pool

There is no automatic door to the pool deck but the pool itself is wheelchair friendly. At first glance it doesn’t seem to be but there is in fact a lift that takes a wheelchair user to the deck of the pool. The pool also has a hard plastic chair lift to assist a wheelchair user into the pool.

Spa Services

All kinds of spa services are available at this hotel and can be conducted within the comfort of your own room. In fact, all such services must take place in your room. Services range from massage to facials to professional make-up to aromatherapy.
